What we do

We provide professional references to hackers willing to use their technical skills to help charities through our technical services initiative. We collect "swag" and distribute it as school supplies to students in underdeveloped countries through our "Swag for Charities" campaign. We accept equipment and financial donations to build computer classrooms in underdeveloped countries through our classroom initiative. We also provide hosting services and technical support to charities that can not afford a web site, or lack the technical resources to maintain one. In a nutshell, we're a group of hackers working together in very interesting ways to make a real difference in this world.

No-Tech Hacking's Proceeds Feed Children

I’m proud to announce the kickoff of the Hackers For Charity “Feed The Chilren” campaign! This idea came to me in late 2007 as I wrapped up the No-Tech Hacking book. I wanted to do something with the proceeds from the book, but I had no idea what, exactly to do. After talking to Sam Tushabe (the founder of AOET) I learned that AOET was struggling to find ways to assist children that were in desperate need, but hadn’t found sponsors to take care of them. We ran some numbers and decided that between my royalties on book sales and Amazon Associate’s proceeds, every book sold on Amazon could feed a child in Uganda for an entire month. I put that on the cover, and beginning in February, 2008 when No-Tech Hacking was released, we’ve been accumulating funds for this purpose.

Since then, some things have changed. For starters, I’ve learned that there’s a much greater need for support in Kenya than in Uganda because the poverty is equally devastating, but because of several factors, food is much more expensive in Kenya. In order to fill that need, I had to make a tough choice–I had to become a liar. Focusing on Kenya meant that I couldn’t meet the promise of every single book feeding a child. But I made the decision to follow my heart to serve Kenya, and I’m glad I did. Now, every 1.5 books sold feeds a child for a month, and this month we sent our first check to AOET Kenya, kicking off the “Feed the Children” campaign.

Thanks to your support, we’ve sold enough books to feed 469 children so far this year! Here’s an excerpt of a letter sent from Danstone Ilavonga, the administrator of AOET Kenya.

I am glad to inform you officially that the food programme has now kicked off. It is on Tuesday the 28 October, 2008 when we distributed food to thirty Children from Lugulu area who are suffering from HIV / AIDS. We identified these children through Friends Lugulu Hospital who give treatment but do not give food. This had made most of these suffering Children not to comply with medication due to lack of food hence deteriorating health conditions. We thank Hackers for Charity for we know this will go long way in alleviating this pathetic situation that these children have been undergoing and experiencing for along time. At last they have a sigh of relief from the pain and hunger.

So spread the word! We really are making a difference with our Amazon click-throughs. To everyone that purchased the No-Tech Hacking book, I want to personally thank you. I’m glad that so many of you have raved about the book itself, but even if you didn’t care for it, know that you literally saved the life of a child in East Africa by buying it. Also, check out our live banners. Hotlink them, as we will update them as we feed more children. Thanks everyone!
